About Us:
San Diego Structural Engineering, Inc. delivers resilient, code-compliant structural and civil design solutions for residential, commercial, and government projects throughout San Diego County. We partner with a wide range of clients including property owners, contractors, architects, consultants, attorneys, agents, and developers, and bring creativity, technical depth, and clear communication to every assignment. Our team values integrity, collaboration, empowerment, adaptability, and respect, and we focus on practical designs that perform in the real world: on site, on schedule, and built to last.
Role overview:
Lead structural projects from kickoff through construction for a fast-moving, high-accountability team. You’ll own scope, schedule, budget, and technical quality across a mix of residential, commercial, institutional, and retrofit work, bringing strong seismic judgment, code fluency, and client leadership.
Work model:

Target Workload: 10–25 hrs/week to start, with the option to scale up to 40 hrs/week for the right fit.
Compensation: 1099 starting at $125/hr
What you’ll do:
- Own project delivery: scopes, schedules, budgets, staffing, and on-time submittals.
- Provide technical leadership for CBC / ASCE 7 design and coordination across wood, steel, concrete, and masonry systems.
- Prepare, review, and seal structural plans, details, and calculations (CA PE required; SE strongly preferred).
- Lead production workflows: tasking, prioritization, QA/QC, and internal coordination with operations leadership.
- Coordinate directly with owners, architects, contractors, consultants, and (as needed) legal/insurance stakeholders.
- Identify risk early and drive practical solutions that match site conditions and permitting constraints.
- Support construction administration: RFIs, submittals, site observations, and field issue resolution.
- Mentor and develop engineers; help set and uphold drafting/calculation standards.
- Contribute to local business development through relationships and reputation in the San Diego market.
Required qualifications:
- BS in Civil Engineering or related (ABET-accredited); MS preferred.
- 6+ years building structures design experience in California.
- Active California PE required (SE strongly preferred).
- Strong seismic and code capability (CBC, ASCE 7; familiarity with San Diego jurisdictional practices is a plus).
- Proficiency with tools such as RISA, EnerCalc, Excel; working knowledge of ETABS/SAP2000, and familiarity with AutoCAD/Revit/BIM workflows.
- Proven ability to lead teams, communicate clearly, and deliver under deadlines.
